THE TORTILLA CURTAIN  (correction)
Javier Hernández
C.The illegal immigrants who succeed in crossing the fence, may still fall prey to the gangs. There are attacks by gangs with baseball bats and guns. So, crossing the border is just the first dangerous step illegal immigrants have to go through. Apart from the gangs, who intimidate and use violence against illegal immigrants for the money or other reasons, illegal immigrants often struggle to find a job. They are mugged by the gangs. They have to face the risk of being arrested by the police and the border patrol. The gangs attack by night and they smuggle drugs. They take people to the border, so there's a connection between both sides. A coyote is someone who helps Mexicans to cross the border in exchange of money.

Commentary: The American dream is the idea that you can become whatever you want. The problem arises when immigrants arrive to the US and they find out there are no good job offers; even some US citizens are living in bad conditions and are unemployed: the American dream is a myth.
The American dream is the idea that anybody can succeed in life, and move up the social ladder through hardwork, and you can make it from rags to riches.
They are dillusioned when they realize it's not real.
America and Candido are unskilled.

In my opinion, the American dream is the dream of living in a country in which the individual freedom is respected, in which everyone has the oppotunity to become whatever you want. The statue of liberty is an iconic symbol of the American dream. This expression was first pronounced by James Truslow Adams in 1931. The idea of the American dream is rooted on the second amendment in the Consitution: all men are equal, and have some inalienable rights, such as life, liberty and the pursue of happiness.
If I were Mexican, jobless and poor, I would try to cross the border by myself, without anyone's help. The desert is tough. The coyote takes them to the border, and then they show them the way: they don't take any risk. Coyotes have the right to cross the border, so they can hide illegal immigrants in the vans to get them to the other side. They are likely to be caught by border patrols.
The illegal immigrants are deported back to Mexico if they' re caught. Some coyotes might do business with the gangs to take the money from the immigrants.
They drive immigrants to a place where the mexican gangs can mug them.

Summar: Candido and America are two Mexican citizens who illegally cross the border. They fled their country in order to achieve the American dream: have a well-paid job, own a house, have kids ... The story is told from America's point of view so ...The author implies that America feels lonely, defenseless and scared once she crossed the border. 3 parts:
-the first part deals with America's quest for a job.
-the second part focuses on the coyote's moves.
-...
If you're caught by the gangs, you' d rather prefer to get caught in group than just on your own.
You may get lost without the help of a coyote.
Coyotes might break the deal, and make you lose your money.
